Green Hard Drive Recycling
"Your computer's hard drive can contain more sensitive data than a room full of file boxes."
Overview
Digital Forensics Worldwide is one of the world's leading hard drive destruction companies. We focus exclusively on the destruction of electronic information while meeting all compliance statutes and eliminating environmental impact around the world.
We offer 100% absolute data destruction with an eco-friendly process. Traditional HD shredders put the entire hard drive in a shredder and then ship the low-yield waste to a refiner. Because the waste is so low yield, the refinery process creates an excess amount of waste (called "sludge") that can be toxic and has a severe environmental impact.
Sustainability, Recycling and Low Environmental Impact
At Digital Forensics Worldwide, our technicians disassemble the hard drive into its core components: covers, casing, printed circuit boards, platters, etc. Then, we destroy the platters ensuring complete data destruction. Afterwards we send all the components to their designated recycling facilities (aluminum, plastics, PCB, etc.) Our downstream recycling partners have been audited and qualified to process all electronic components in accordance with our strict environment requirements, which in many cases exceed minimum regulatory statutes. This separation of components into raw materials and verification of recyclers reduces the carbon-footprint of the hard drive destruction to the absolute minimum possible.
Certificates of Indemnification and Certificates of Destruction
Digital Forensics Worldwide assumes all data security and environmental liabilities associated with any privacy or legislative compliance risk. We are a fully insured and licensed professional investigation company that establishes an end-to-end chain of custody and provides Certificates of Destruction for all recycled assets and Certificates of Indemnification for all assets.
Our internal process scans the bar codes of the hard drives as we receive them — and scans them again when they are destroyed. Once received, we provide a Certificate of Indemnification that transfers the liability of the sensitive information to DF Worldwide. Once destroyed, we provide a Certificate of Destruction with the following information:
- Individual model and serial numbers of all drives destroyed
- Private investigation license number of the investigator that was responsible for the destruction
- Low-impact environmental recycling statement
This documentation meets privacy law recording requirements including the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA), the Fair and Accurate Credit Transaction Act (FACTA), Sarbanes-Oxley (SOX) and Gramm-Leach-Bliley. Our bar code scanning system and internal processes makes compliance fast and accurate.
Integrity and Chain of Custody
We operate with the utmost of integrity by putting our investigation license on the line with every destruction. We are a licensed and bonded professional investigation company that operates nationwide with our primary destruction facility in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Michigan is one of a handful of states that has changed their laws and mandated that in order to handle digital evidence in the private sector you need to have a professional investigation license. So when you send your hard drives to us, we are able to establish a chain of custody and provide a certificate that can hold up in court.
Logistics
Hard drives that contain sensitive and highly confidential information pose a unique challenge because they are both high value and high risk for corporations. Digital Forensics Worldwide will provide hardened, padlocked cases for secure collection of hard drives awaiting disposal. In addition, Digital Forensics Worldwide utilizes secure, nationwide logistic carriers to ensure an end-to-end chain of custody for clients' assets.
In most cases a DF Worldwide logistics security specialist partner picks up the locked hard drive container at client locations. The container (for which the specialist does not have a key) will remain in the partners' possession throughout the transportation process until it arrives at the DF Worldwide destruction facility. This method of transportation is court-tested and an important part of assuring compliance with data security and environmental management laws. The knowledge of the GPS location of the vehicle and assets at any time and the reporting on both pick-up and delivery of the assets to the destruction facility provides the peace of mind and audit trail required by the most security conscious corporations.
